Name/Titlephoto negative - 30th August 1940 air raid
About this objectThe last two days of August 1940 saw an increase in the number of attacks on 11 Group fighter stations, particularly Biggin Hill. In the evening of Friday 30th August nine Junkers JU88 bombers made a surprise attack on the airfield. The damage was appalling with many buildings and aircraft destroyed.
This photograph shows the Headquarter's Building after the raid. The hanger next door shows the damage to the roof where, reputably, a freshly painted car that had been parked outside the hanger to dry, was blown into the air by a bomb blast and returned to earth through the hanger roof. The hanger was subsequently destroyed in an air raid in September 1940.
In September 1980 RAF Biggin Hill gathered together a collection of photographs from museums, commercial and private individuals to mount an exhibition to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. The collection was passed on to Bob Ogley when the RAF withdrew from Biggin Hill.
This photograph is part of the Bob Ogley Photograph Collection.
