During a night flying exercise on 11th August 1939 Hurricane, L1567, piloted by Flying Officer Harold Stewart Olding, crashed into the hillside at Lusted Hall Farm, Tatsfield, Surrey when the aircraft's engine cut out. Robin Buchanan-Wollaston was ordered to fly to the crash site to mark it with a flare. Flying Hurricane L1662, he too crashes into the hillside less than 100 yards from the first crash. Both pilots were killed within a few hours of each other.
In September 1980 RAF Biggin Hill gathered together a collection of photographs from museums, commercial and private individuals to mount an exhibition to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. The collection was passed on to Bob Ogley when the RAF withdrew from Biggin Hill.
