Name/TitlePub table inscribed with the names of the Guys medical students and fighter pilots from Biggin Hill
About this objectA table from the Whyte Lyon pub, donated by Guys medical students who were on secondment at Farnborough Hospital which was next door to the pub. The students carved 'Guys' and the date 1941 onto the table. The fighter pilots from Biggin Hill, who also frequented the pub, proceeded to carve their initials all over the table top. The table remained in the Whyte Lyon for many years before being donated to the Officer's Mess at RAF Biggin Hill where it remained until the station was finally closed down in 1992.
The table may have been involved in various Mess athletic activities, one of which required progressing around the room without touching the ground. Another was doing a headstand on a table top and drinking beer whilst inverted.
The table was finally donated to the RAF Chapel of Remembrance at Biggin Hill. A parishioner lovingly restored it to its former glory.
